Overview

This foundation course is intended to provide the student with the background knowledge necessary to take full advantage of further maintenance courses. During the training the student will acquire an understanding of Alpha bus & switched base architectures and basic principles of operation. In addition the Alpha I/O busses, configuration and operation will be reviewed. Some student exercises are provided to reinforce classroom lectures.

Pre-requisites

The successful completion of OpenVMS for Engineers (EY-L300-LO) and / or Tru64 Unix V5 for Engineers (P140). It is recommended that the engineer has at least 6 months field experience on small systems maintenance

Objectives

• List the Alpha product families
• Understand the basic Alpha Architecture
• Understand the Alpha principles of operation
• Recognize Alpha I/O bus options & configuration
• Understand the purpose of the Privileged Architecture Library (PAL)
• Understand how the Alpha chip is initialized
• Demonstrate the use of SRM and ARC console command languages
• Perform AlphaServer Firmware upgrades
