Course Title: AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 Systems Installation and Maintenance

Course Number: 1927

Duration : 5 days
Overview

This course is designed for Customer Service Engineers who provide maintenance, installation and operational support for high-end AlphaServer systems. This five-day course introduces the exciting Alpha EV7 based system from HP. The elegant design of this system is a ‘Marvel’ of engineering skill, with it’s low chip count, high bandwidth memory and I/O subsystem. There is much to learn about this system despite its deceptively simple design. The server management subsystem, resource partitioning, expansion, fault resilience and platform management all contribute to this learning experience.

Pre-requisites

To receive the full benefit of this training, it is recommended that delegates have the following skills and knowledge:

  • A basic understanding of Alpha systems and their operation
  • An understanding of PCI and SCSI concepts
  • Experience in servicing other systems from the AlphaServer family of products
  • Experience with System Event Analyze (formerly Compaq Analyze)
  • Advanced user-level experience using the following operating systems:
               HP Tru64 UNIX
               HP OpenVMS

Completing the following courses can satisfy these pre-requisites

  • Fundamentals of Alpha Systems Maintenance
  • AlphaServer DS/ES Systems Maintenance (9998)
  • AlphaServer GS80/160/320 Installation and Maintenance (715)
  • WEBES V4.0 (W25)
  • Tru64 UNIX V5 for Engineers (P140)
  • OpenVMS for Engineers (L300)
Objectives

To install, troubleshoot and maintain HP AlphaServer ES80/GS1280 systems effectively, a service engineers should be able to:

  • Introduce the Alpha EV7 architecture
  • Describe the basic architecture of the AlphaServer ES80/GS1280 systems
  • Describe the basic components of the AlphaServer ES80/GS1280 systems
  • Identify the components and their functions for each system
  • Understand the IP (Inter Processor) and I/O subsystem cabling
  • Understand the configuration rules for the I/O subsystem and supported options
  • Understand the power subsystem configuration
  • Introduce the redundant cooling system
  • Perform an installation of an AlphaServer ES80 and GS1280 system
  • Use PMU and SRM console commands to test a system after installation and to gather information for troubleshooting the system
  • Understand the in-band Ethernet configuration
Access and use the server management subsystem
  • Perform firmware update
  • Interpret the results of console diagnostics to isolate a faulty FRU
  • Collect advanced error information for analysis by support engineers
  • Use System Event Analyzer (SEA) to diagnose problems with the system and to locate the faulty FRU(s) associated with a problem
  • Remove and replace a faulty FRU to repair the system and verify the operation of the new FRU
  • Understand upgrade procedures
