Overview

The AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 Systems Support course provides advanced information for troubleshooting and fault analysis for the HP AlphaServer ES47, ES80, and GS1280 family of systems. Course topics include system architecture, fault management, diagnostic tools, error handling for all the main components of the system (EV7, Rbox, Zbox, and IO7), environmental error handling, operating system error handling, and multiple error condition analysis. Lab exercises are provided.

The AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 Systems Support course is designed to provide service support engineers with the necessary information to perform advanced troubleshooting for AlphaServer ES47, ES80, and GS1280 systems

Pre-requisites
To receive the full benefit of this training, it is recommended that course participants have the following skills and knowledge:
  • Successful completion of the AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 Installation and Maintenance course (ELMS1927).
  • A minimum of one-year experience in servicing AlphaServer GS series systems in a support role.
  • Experience in servicing PCI and SCSI options in a support role.
  • Experience in supporting other systems from the AlphaServer family of products in a support role.
  • Experience using System Event Analyzer (SEA), both the command line interface (CLI) and the web-browser interface (GUI).
  • Advanced user-level experience using the following operating systems:
      • hp Tru64 UNIX
      • hp OpenVMS
Completing the following courses can satisfy some of these prerequisites:
  • AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 Installation and Maintenance (ELMS1927)
  • AlphaServer GS80/GS160/GS320 Systems Advanced Troubleshooting (YY42)
  • WEBES 4.0 Training (W25)
Objectives
To perform advanced troubleshooting for HP AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 systems effectively, a support engineer should be able to:
  • Describe the details of the architecture of the AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 Systems
  • Describe the details of the fault management capabilities of the AlphaServer ES47/ES80/GS1280 systems.
  • Describe how the system handles correctable errors, uncorrectable errors, faults, and system events.
  • Describe the diagnostic tools available for advanced troubleshooting and analysis.
  • Explain how errors are handled in the EV7 core.
  • Explain how errors are handled in the Zbox subsystem.
  • Explain how errors are handled in the Rbox subsystem.
  • Explain how errors are handled in the IO7 subsystem.
  • Explain how errors are handled in the system environmental subsystem.
  • Explain how errors are handled in the operating systems.
  • Explain how to analyze multiple error conditions.
  • Use MLERR to analyze an error in the EV7 core and other subsystems.
  • Use console commands to gather information for troubleshooting the system.
  • Use the System Event Analyze (SEA) CLI and GUI to diagnose problems with the system and to locate the faulty FRU(s) associated with a problem.
  • Describe how to get error information from the operating system.
  • Describe how to get error information using the console.
