Overview

This course is intended for experienced PC support staff who need to gain a good understanding of local & wide area networking technologies or who wish to achieve Network+ certification

Pre-requisites

Delegates attending this course should have a sound knowledge of PC hardware and operating systems. Ideally students should have passed CompTIA A+ or hold equivalent knowledge

Objectives

After attending this course you will be able to:

  • Identify IEEE 802 standards.
  • Contrast different methods of media access (contention, token passing, and demand priority.
  • Describe the features and capabilities of network products (Ethernet, Token Ring, and demand priority).
  • Understand the operation of lower layer components (repeaters, hubs, switches, and bridges).
  • Understand cabling methods and structured wiring systems.
  • Know how to select, install, and configure a network adapter.
  • Describe the functions of routers.
  • Understand the capabilities of network and transport protocols (TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, and NetBIOS).
  • Gain an understanding of client/server protocols.
  • Describe network services (file and print sharing, email, groupware, and scheduling).
  • Understand how to access a NetWare server using a Windows client workstation.
  • Understand how to install clients for Windows servers.

  • Learn about the common network attacks and how to defend against them.
  • Describe effective password policies.

  • Describe the the role of firewalls, proxy servers, NAT, and ICS in securing Internet connections.
