Overview

This course is designed for experienced system/storage administrators and any IT support staff who will have responsibility for managing and administering an EVA Storage Array Solution in a heterogeneous or homogeneous SAN environment. It is a theory and lab based course that covers a detailed exploration of the technology of the 2nd generation HSV2x (EVA4000/4100/6000/6100/8000/8100) series of EVA storage arrays. Hardware and software installation and configuration relating to this range of EVA's, management and troubleshooting procedures and options are discussed and the installation of Command View EVA software will also be covered.

Pre-requsities
  • Knowledge of FibreChannel and SCSI technologies and RAID concepts would be beneficial
  • Previous knowledge of Storage Subsystems would be an advantage but is not essential
Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Describe the features and functions of the EVA HSV2x0 hardware components
  • Identify the physical, management and interconnect features and functions of the HSV2x0 controller(s), disk drive enclosure, FC-AL drives and FC back-end loop switch
  • Describe the rack models, power cabling and cabling configurations for all HSV2x0 models
  • Describe how to perform initial configuration of the EVA components
  • Define the terminology associated with the EVA and virtual storage
  • Describe how the EVA implements virtualisation technology
  • Use Command View EVA to set up, configure and manage the EVA
  • Describe all aspects of EVA error reporting and diagnostics generation
  • Describe how to install and use Command View EVA software
  • Describe how to install and use the Storage System Scripting Utility (SSSU)
  • Describe how to install MPIO software for the Windows operating system
  • Describe storage configuration best practices
  • Identify and use basic troubleshooting resources contained within Command View EVA
  • Identify Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs)and perform customer removal and replacement procedures

  • Using Command View EVA Management GUI software to configure, manage and understand disk groups, virtual disks, VRAID concepts and VRAID0/VRAID5/VRAID1 Implementation, LUN presentation and O/S specifics, SnapShots, SnapClones, Containers, Mirrorclones, LUN shrink & extend, Disk Group Occupancy and Disk Drive Occupancy
  • Disk drive and Disk group manipulation procedures relating to insertion and removal of disk drives
  • Installation of Command View EVA, SSSU & MPIO software
  • Using Command View EVA management GUI software to manage and understand disk levelling, distributed sparing
  • Using the Storage System Scripting Utility (SSSU) CLI software to gather information from the EVA and build scripts to manipulate, manage and configure EVA components without having to use Command View EVA
  • VCS and XCS Code dependencies and operational constraints
  • Supported hardware configurations
  • Monitoring the EVA storage subsystem rack and associated software and hardware via Command View EVA
  • LED functions and operation for the controllers, I/O modules, EMU and disk enclosures
  • EMU error conditions and error decode
  • Controller event log, controller termination log, management agent log interpretation via Command View EVA
  • CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) replacement procedures.
