SNIA - Update
In our last newsletter, we announced the availability of courses at HOST that are geared to helping delegates prepare for the SNIA (Storage Network Industry Association) certifications. There are some changes coming up to the detailed content of the SNIA exams that you may be aware of. The courses we offer are being updated to mirror these changes. Course numbers, titles, durations and costs remain unchanged.

Service Methodology - a Question
Reviewing and adjusting Service and Support processes for IT is a continuous activity. The reviews are driven by the highly competitive nature of the computer support industry towards creating advantaged cost structures. Two trends are obvious and you might like to think of the impact of these on the content of technical training?
The first trend is the increasing involvement of the end-user in the repair process. This started in the PC maintenance area with customers being expected to replace keyboards, mice and eventually monitors. Today, manufacturers would expect customers to replace hard drives - and further, the customer involvement in repair has extended to the data centre and network components. The products themselves have evolved so that few, if any, special tools are required to perform such replacements.
Secondly, there is an intermediate level of skill required in cases where the diagnosis is performed off site but the repair and replacement is beyond the capability of the customer - or is unsafe for the customer to perform. The service engineer sent to site needs to know how to safely replace the component and check that all is well. He/she does not need to understand how the equipment operates or how to troubleshoot it. This is known as the "Smart Hands" level of engineer. This person can not only replace components, but act as the hands and eyes of a person with a higher level of skill located remotely - perhaps even on another continent.
We are developing courses to support this Smart Hands role. The concept is that we train Smart Hands within their role on a number of products and enabling them handle almost any piece of equipment.
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated - do you think these courses would be of use to you?
Is your maintenance and support operation moving more and more towards the Smart Hands model?
Please contact Stuart Summers to share your thoughts: mail   s.summers@hostcomputers.co.uk or Tel 01952 460551.

HP LaserJet - New Foundation Courses
We have devised and scheduled three new Foundation Level HP LaserJet courses. While primarily intended for Users and Administrators, these three are equally suited to maintenance and support staff, or indeed anyone, as a generic introduction to HP Laser printers.
T406 Introduction to HP Monochrome and Colour LaserJet Printers
T407 HP LaserJet Best Practices
T408 HP LaserJet Printers Administration, Software, Drivers and Firmware

HP LaserJet - HP Certification Course Update
A new HOST course T409 has been added which will specifically enable attendees to prepare for the HP LaserJet and MFP Fundamentals Certification exam. We offer this course as a hands-on instructor led alternative to the Web based training provided by HP.
Successful completion of the associated exam confers the APS (Accredited Platform Specialist) accreditation as part of the HP Certified Professional Program (HPCP). Having acquired this accreditation, students could progress with us to the model specific HP Certified LaserJet courses to obtain their HP Service Qualifications.

HP LaserJet - Bespoke Courses
If training on a number of model ranges is needed and does not fit into the above structure, we offer bespoke Break-fix courses under the umbrella of course number T410. Generally, a bespoke event comprises the content of the Fundamentals Course (T409) (optional) plus two or three Printer and/or MFP model ranges in a 4 or 5 day week as required.
HP Certification courses can be delivered as a bespoke event of similar structure. In this case the HP course numbers will be used. This is required for delegates to have their attendance recorded in the HP systems which will in turn grant the Service Qualifications.
Bespoke courses are custom priced and intended for cases where you have 4 or more delegates requiring the same course content.
